A significant announcement at JavaOne, Terrence Barr reminds readers of his blog, was the news that JavaFX 2.0 is available for MacOS X as a developer preview, along with NetBeans 7.1 Beta, which includes full support for JavaFX 2.0 as well as Java 7. Barr provides links to these downloads as well as to FAQs on JavaFX 2.0. A further link leads to a tutorial on JavaFX 2.0 that deals with getting started, creating a user interface, effects, animation and media, application logic, API reference and deployment.

In his blog post Inside the Oracle Database Cloud Service Rick Greenwald summarizes the introduction of the Oracle Public Cloud, which was a major event at Oracle OpenWorld 2011. In his summary Greenwald touches in such features of the Oracle Database Service as RESTful Web services, Application Express (APEX) and the suite of productivity applications that enable users to track events on a shared calendar or manage projects in the cloud.

Two patch updates were released in October 2011, reports Eric Maurice in his oracle.com/security blog. One is the October 2011 Critical Patch Update and the other the Critical Patch Update for Java SE"] The latter provides fixes for 20 new security vulnerabilities, Maurice reports, and the former provides fixes for 57 new security vulnerabilities. He points out that, because of Oracle's diligence in identifying and fixing vulnerabilities, the number of required fixes declines with each passing release.

The release of Java 7, improvements in JavaFX and reforms to the Java Community Process are among the developments at Oracle that have renewed Andrew Binstock's confidence in Java Technology. Writing for Dr. Dobb's, Binstock proclaims that Oracle's clear commitment to Java has infused new life into what many feared would become a neglected technology following the acquisition of Sun. At the end of the recent JavaOne Conference, Binstock claims, the collective feeling was that Oracle is moving Java very much in the right direction.

"The Exo-Friendly Enterprise with Oracle Desktop Virtualization," a blog by Chris Kawalek, reports that three of the winners at Oracle OpenWorld 2011 of the annual Oracle Eco-Enterprise Innovation Awards used Oracle desktop virtualization in their enterprise. These organizations are:

Kawalek notes that the use of Oracle desktop virtualization by these three winning organizations conclusively demonstrates the ecological benefits of desktop virtualization and thin client computing.

In a recent episode of the Oracle in a Class by Itself podcast the panel discusses datacenter management using the new functionality in Solaris 11 and Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops Center, explaining how Oracle's integrated approach to design creates a means whereby sys admins can more readily manage a datacenter from a single point in the system. Solaris 11, the panel explains, has been designed as a virtualization-aware solution. The panel also reminds listeners of the November 9, 2011 launch of Solaris 11 and directs them to Oracle.com/events for further information.

The Oracle NoSQL Database, part of Oracle's Big Data Portfolio, is now available for download on the Oracle Technical Network. With its simple key-value data model, the highly-available and scalable Oracle NoSQL Database enables customers to easily manage massive amounts of data with dynamic schemas such as web log data, sensor and smart meter data, data gathered for personalization, and data maintained by social networks. Also soon to be available from Oracle is the Oracle Big Data Appliance, an optimized platform for running the Oracle NoSQL Database and Oracle's other Big Data offerings.

There is now a micro-update available to the Sun ZFS 7000 Storage Appliance 2010.Q3.4.2 software release that provides support for 73GB Logzilla SSDs for the Sun ZFS 7120 Storage Appliance, a firmware upgrade for high speed 15K RPM 300GB disk drives and over 20 bug fixes. The Solaris 10 8/11 (Update 10) patchset is now available from My Oracle Support (MOS). While these patchsets will bring all pre-existing packages up to the same software level as the corresponding Solaris Update, it is important to know that, as the blog points out, applying the patchset is not the same as upgrading to the Solaris Update release, as the patchset will not include any new packages introduced in the Solaris Update or any obsolete packages deleted in the Update.

The NetBeans IDE consists of an open-source IDE and an application platform that enable developers to rapidly create web, enterprise, desktop, and mobile applications using the Java platform, as well as PHP, JavaScript and Ajax, Groovy and Grails, and C/C++. NetBeans IDE 7.1 Beta introduces support for JavaFX 2.0 by enabling the full compile/debug/profile development cycle for JavaFX 2.0 applications. The release also provides significant Swing GUI Builder enhancements, CSS3 support, and tools for visual debugging of Swing and JavaFX user interfaces.

With 10 active Java Specification Requests (JSRs) currently being worked on through the Java Community Process (JCP) by over 20 different participating companies and represented by hundreds of engineers, indications are that Java technology, Java EE 7 in particular, is alive and well. And Java EE 6 is not doing all that badly either, given that six major IT vendors have released certified, open source and commercial implementations of Java EE 6 since it became available in December 2009. Java EE 7 is being designed to further enhance the Java EE platform for Cloud environments.

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison recently unveiled a new service, the Oracle Public Cloud, which is designed to deliver subscription-based, self-service access to Oracle Fusion Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Cloud Service, Oracle Fusion Human Capital Management (HCM) Cloud Service, Oracle Social Network, Oracle Java Cloud Service and Oracle Database Cloud Service. Customers will be able to deploy existing standard Java and Oracle Database applications to the Oracle Public Cloud without rewriting them, allowing users to take advantage of their existing IT assets, skills and ecosystems.
